"Joe Calarco has made a reputation for shaking up
the familiar. His Shakespeare's R&J restaged Romeo and Juliet
in an oppressive Catholic boys' school with an all-male cast. His
revolutionary restaging of Lerner & Loewe's
My Fair Lady at the Hangar last
summer made the entire venture a play-within-a-play with a decidedly more
aggressive Eliza and a hunkish Higgins. His reshapings are subtler and
slighter this time out but are nonetheless critical. Calarco's direction
emphasizes an individualizing humanity for each of the men, and in his
treatment of Curley's wife, Calarco erases the ugly misogyny present in
other interpretations and hinted at in the novel."
"Played down and dirty and, literally, on a dirt
stage, this rendition of Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" is a powerful piece.
Joe Calarco's direction and staging realistically create the world of the
itinerant, Depression-era farm worker, while the portraits of the characters
seem dead-on to those of the novel. The production is fraught with powerful
ensemble work."
"The talents of director Joe Calarco are assured
in this emotional production, tragic and uplifting in its humanity." |
